Utah leopard has root canal

Animal dentists have said that a leopard from Utah’s Hogle Zoo will need to have root canal work to fix a damaged tooth.

Vladamere, a 6-year-old male Amur leopard, needs to have the high-tech procedure to repair a partially missing cracked tooth.

Zoo officials say he will undergo the operation on Saturday 13 February 2010 at the L.S. Skaggs Animal Health Center.

They first noticed Vladamere’s tooth issues while training him.

Veterinarians decided that performing a root canal would be better for the leopard than a full extraction as part of the tooth is still intact.

They will also be giving Vladamere a filling to repair a cavity in one of his canine teeth.

A native of eastern Russia, Amur leopards one of the world’s most endangered cat species.

Less than 40 Amur leopards remain in the wild. There are about 70 in American zoos.
