A dentist has been appointed as the first dental provider to the American ski and snowboard teams.
Dr James Harding, of Vail Valley Center for Aesthetic Dentistry, accepted the position after Richard Quincy, US Ski Team medical director, rang him last week and asked him if he wanted the job.
As part of his new role Dr Harding will also be providing dental services to all athletes from the US’s Alpine, Snowboard, Nordic and Ski and Snowboard Cross teams.
Currently researching performance mouth guards, Dr Harding is looking at different ways for US Ski to get an advantage over their opponents.
He said that a small advantage could be the difference between a gold and a silver medal and added that hundredths of a second can make the difference to world-class athletes.
Dr Harding called his appointment an incredible honor and added that it was a wonderful validation to be picked to care for the nation’s top athletes.
