US dentists offer children without insurance free dental care

Dentists across America will open their doors to children that don’t have dental insurance this Friday as part of a national programme organised by Give Kids a Smile.

Several dentists are expected to take part in the national event, which will offer routine dental examinations to children that are not covered by medical or dental insurance policies or by Medicaid. In a similar event in February, over 600 children received free care and the event raised over $400,000.

Dentists have praised the work of Give Kids a Smile and are pleased to be working alongside the charity; Dr Grant Mason said the programmes were extremely important because children without insurance often have extensive decay and worsening oral health conditions that would never be treated if it weren’t for events like those organised by Give Kids a Smile.

Many families in America are struggling to afford dental care and cannot afford the insurance policies that cover medical and dental treatments; consequently, they go without the care they need and live with conditions that may be getting worse by the day. Without the work of charities and volunteers, many would never receive the dental treatment they need; however, it is hoped that these problems will soon be a thing of the past when President Obama’s healthcare reform measures come into play in the coming years.
