An unregistered dentist who caused patients permanent tooth damage has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

43 year old Ronnie Barogiannis treated hundreds of patients at an East Yorkshire practice, using the name of an old colleague.

According to police, eight patients experienced severe damage as a result of his illegal work.

Barogiannis was fined in 2013 for operating illegal practice in Scotland. He admitted fraud and five counts of actual bodily harm.

In 2013-2014, he was reported to the authorities after he accidentally sent personal data using his actual name through when Cottingham’s Smiles Dental Practice changed owernership.

The new owners got in touch with the General Dental Council and discovered his previous deception. He was arrested two years ago in October, but released on bail. Though his Greek passport was seized, he fled the country four days later with a Swedish passport.

Barogiannis completed a dental qualification in 2003, but has never registered himself as a dentist. He was extradited back to the UK in March this year. Investigations by the police found that he earned close to £50,000 whilst practicing illegally. Around 700 patients were interviewed as part of the investigation.
