Staff and students from the University of Louisville are preparing to travel to eastern Kentucky next weekend to help out at a free dental clinic.

More than 120 members of staff, students and alumni will make the trip to assist at the Remote Area Medical clinic. Remote Area Medical is a non-profit organisation, which provides free medical and dental care for people living in remote areas of the USA and other countries around the world.

The free dental clinic will take place at Pike County Central High School and volunteers will provide a range of dental services, including fillings, tooth extractions, cleaning treatments, denture services and oral cancer screening. The clinic will also offer medical screening examinations, including cholesterol, diabetes and cardiovascular screening tests and eye examinations.

Lee Mayer, from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, said that community outreach was an important part of the school’s commitments and the clinic was an opportunity for staff and students to help out, as well as a valuable hands-on learning experience for students.

The two-day event is expected to attract large crowds of people and organisers are expecting some people to camp out overnight to secure an appointment. Free medical and dental clinics have become increasingly popular as more and more people struggle to afford medical costs on top of basic living costs.
