The University of Buffalo hosted its first free dental event for veterans on the 18th April. The clinic was in aid of National Prosthodontics Awareness Week and marked an opportunity for the university to thank those who have served America in the armed forces in the past.

The Dentistry Smiles on Veterans Program is an initiative the university is hoping to continue for years to come. On the day, veterans were able to access many free dental treatments including cleaning treatments, extraction, dental checks and repairs at the School of Dental Medicine.

Dean of the school Michael Glick said it is an honour to provide care for the veterans and to welcome them to the university. The programme is a chance to give something back and to a fill a gap that means many veterans are unable to access routine dental care.

The clinic was supported by the SDM and Eighth District Dental Society, and was open to veterans who were discharged from service from 1990 onwards.

The event was also attended by Mayor of Buffalo, Byron Brown.
