The UK’s first specialist orthodontic practice is celebrating its 40 year anniversary.

Forty years ago Pat McDonogh took a brave step and opened Croydon Orthodontic Practice in South Croydon. Since it was first launched, the practice has grown and is now hugely successful. The business is now run by Pat’s son, Tim and has bases in Redhill and Blunt Road, South Croydon as well as a private practice in Purley and the original orthodontic centre.

Mr McDonogh, who is now 73, said that at the time the decision to open a specialist centre was a brave one, but the demand for services was actually very high. Over the last forty years Mr McDonogh said that attitudes to orthodontic treatment have changed enormously. In the past parents were very resistant to treatment for their children, however, this soon started to change and many parents began to ask for treatment for their children.

Mr McDonogh decided it was the correct time to slow down and sold the business to his son, Tim, two years ago. He is now working with his other son converting and renovating property but maintains a keen interest in the business.

The NHS practices are mainly concerned with the orthodontic treatment of children, but there as been a huge growth in demand for adult treatment, thanks to advances in technology and science, which have produced a new range of innovative orthodontic treatments.

The forty year anniversary was celebrated last week at a party at the Blunt Road practice. As well as celebrating the landmark event, Tim also got the opportunity to present a cheque for £10,000, which was raised by running the London marathon and will be used for research into Hodgkins disease.
