Tributes are pouring in for two Birmingham dentists who died while swimming off the popular beauty spot of Comino in Malta at the weekend. Family members, colleagues and friends have paid tribute to the two dentists, who were both aged 35.

Kamran Shabir and Lyace Ali were holidaying in Malta over the bank holiday weekend when they encountered problems in the Blue Lagoon area. Local police confirmed that the men were spotted at around 3.30pm and rescue crews tried to save them. One of the men was airlifted to hospital and the other taken by boat, but sadly both lost their lives. A third man, an associate of the pair, survived and has described his colleagues and friends as the ‘best people’. The three dentists had been friends since university and ran The Sheldon Dental Practice together. Dr Ali also owned clinics in Scotland.

In a statement released by the families, the dentists, who worked together at The Sheldon Dental Practice in Birmingham, were described as “well-respected, kind and loving men”, who were, above anything, also incredibly humble.

Outside the clinic in Sheldon, flowers adorn the pavement, many of which include messages and colleagues and patients have paid their respects. Local newsagent Parmit Kaur Dhariwal said that they were “such decent boys and they had a full life ahead of them.” Dr Ali was married with three young children.

Local MP Julian Knight has already pledged to help the families.
