Tooth shade 'dependent on DNA'
The San Antonio dentist said that although the colour of teeth is largely dependent on the individual's genetic makeup, new whitening technology can help achieve a brighter shade.
"Speak with your cosmetic dentist," he advised. "He or she is the most qualified person to help you decide which type of stain removal is the right one for you."
Dr Hale explained that some teeth stains are caused by other sources such as smoking, pigmented food or drink and hardened plaque.
Internal causes include certain antibiotics, an increase in fluoride and ageing.
He claimed that professional bleaching treatments can help whiten existing stains or dental bonding and veneers can cover up the marks.
The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has warned that the effects of whitening toothpastes will only last a short time.
For a more long-term result, the organisation advised seeking professional treatment.
