Thousands Of Pieces Of Illegal Dental Equipment Seized In The UK

Sample News Big

More than twelve thousand pieces of illegal dental equipment have been seized in the last six months in the UK, according to officials.

Officials confirmed that a large number of counterfeit goods had been taken, along with products accompanied by incorrect or sub-standard documentation; many of the products were marked with CE safety marks, which actually transpired to be symbols meaning Chinese Export.

The counterfeit goods were seized as part of a wider investigation by the (MHRA) Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency and is in charge of ensuring the products and equipment used by dentists in the UK meets certain standards. Any dentists who knowingly use sub-standard or fake equipment could face prosecution. Among the collection of seized goods were faulty dental drills, counterfeit X-ray units and fake copies of leading brand equipment

Danny Lee-Frost, from the enforcement team at the MHRA, said that counterfeit products posed a real threat to the safety of members of the public and the agency is working hard to protect dental patients and dentists. All products that are used in the UK should meet European standards.

The MHRA has been working with firms such as Ebay and Amazon to crack down on counterfeits and ensure that products that are sold in the UK meet the relevant health and safety standards. Dentists have also been warned to look out for deals that seem too good to be true online.
