The Faculty of General Dental Practice has shared new guidelines for treating patients who suffer from dementia.

Over 50 new recommendations have been published to help dental professionals and healthcare workers to provide better care for patients with dementia. Research suggests that around 5 percent of the population suffers from dementia and the body is hoping to ensure that patients have access to suitable dental care programmes. The aim is to retain dignity, improve nutrition and promote independence and integration at the same time as ensuring that patients who want to see a dentist can do so with minimal hassle.

As part of the new guidelines, there is a useful section, which contains information about potential dental issues that may be faced by patients who have been diagnosed with the progressive condition. There is also advice about helping patients who are unable to communicate verbally and guidelines to improve care management.

The guidelines are outlined in a summary of recommendations and there’s also a checklist health professionals can use to ensure that patients enjoy the best dental care in an environment, which is safe and secure.
