Teeth whitening warning issued

Teeth whitening warning issuedTrading Standards officers in Northamptonshire have warned dentists and their patients to avoid using teeth whitening products found to contain dangerous levels of hydrogen peroxide.

County council officers seized a range of teeth whitening products sold in a local shop that were intended for supply to dentists and other suppliers via an online shop.

High levels of hydrogen peroxide can cause mouth irritation and increased tooth sensitivity to temperature changes.

It an also affect pre-existing tissue injuries and heighten the effects of alcohol or tobacco, as well as having the ability to stimulate the growth of cancer cells.

Councillor Liz Tavener, cabinet member for community safety said: "Tooth whiteners have increased in popularity over the past few years and people may have chosen one of these kits believing them to be safe to use."

She added patients should ask their dentist or beauty professional if the product they are using contains hydrogen peroxide marked ">0.1 per cent".

There are many different ways to whiten teeth, including do-it-yourself strips and laser whitening.
