Survey sets out to highlight the low pay of all dental nurses

An online survey is to be made available to dental nurses around the UK in order to help show that the yearly maintenance charge is too high for low paid dental nurses.
The survey has been created by the British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN) and will be presented to the General Dental Council (GDC) once results are collated.
The questionnaire is available online and includes sections to do with salary, additional benefits and the domestic situation of dental nurses.
Of particular interest to the BADN are the views of dental nurses on minimum salary, single parents, main family earners and those working part time.
Angie McBain, president of BADN, said: “We are receiving many calls in the BADN office from dental nurses – particularly those who work part time – who find that the £96 annual registration fee is more than they can afford.”
The BADN had advised the GDC to lower the fee, particularly for those who work part time, but the GDC claimed there was little evidence to support such changes.
Ms McBain added: “A dental nurse working full time on minimal wage earns around £9,600 a year before tax and pays a £96 registration fee.”
In comparison, Ms McBain noted, a dentist pays £438. Such a fee is measly when thought of in relation to the average earnings of a self-employed dentist, at around £89,000 prior to tax.
Ms McBain has urged all dental nurses to take part in the survey. “You don’t have to be a BADN member. We urge all dental nurses, but particularly those working in practice, to take part so we can build up an accurate picture.”
