Super surgery may be ready by January
Burnley could have new super dental surgery operating in the area by January 2010.
Lancashire Telegraph reported the news that surgery could be opened within the next few months even though no premises have yet been purchased to house the clinic.
The practice, which will be situated in-between Burnley and Brierfield, will reportedly serve around 10,000 patients in the area.
NHS East Lancashire, has said the clinic could open its doors as early as January in temporary accommodation until a satisfactory site can be secured.
The local community is welcoming this news, as the surgery would help tackle severe dental shortages in the area.
Currently, many patients are waiting to be allocated to a dentists, while a many more are not registered at all and are simply relying on emergency treatment.
Gordon Birtwistle, Burnley council leader, said three different locations were being considered as the new location for the super surgery.
Reports suggest that the Primary Care Trust (PCT) will use £2.5million to attempt to remedy issues with dental care in the area.
Brierfield groups are also calling for more dental provision after they requested two new NHS dentists for the town’s main health centre five months ago.
Tonia Barton, a Borough councillor and chairman of the Brierfield and Reedley committee for Pendle council, said the council were pushing the PCT to take heed of its demands.
A report from the PCT said that a Brierfield facility should be in place by November or December and that Burnley could open by January.
