The people of Sunderland are being encouraged to get behind the ‘Strip off for Smiles’ campaign, which will help poor children living in Morocco.

The campaign, which is supported by Sunderland Football Club, is persuading anyone who has an old football kit to donate it to charity. The kits will then be flown to Africa by dentist Michael Oliver and given to the villagers in the El Jebah region, as a good will gesture.

Michael Oliver, dentist at Oliver’s Dental Studio and one of the founding members of charity, Dental Mavericks, will be making his third trip to Morocco to provide basic dental care for many in El Jebah.

A team of volunteers to help those who have probably never seen a dentist before will also join him.

Michael told The Echo newspaper, which is also backing the campaign, that he took 150 red and white striped shirts last year and they received a very warm reception from the villagers. Michael went on to say that he felt like the “Pied Piper” with families running out of their homes to get the shirts. Children living in the region are very interested in the Premier League and they are extremely grateful of the gifts.

The team will leave for Morocco on September 21st and any shirts will be welcomed. Sunderland Commercial Director, Gary Hutchinson, said that the club is really pleased to support the campaign and encourages all Sunderland fans to dig out their old kits and donate them to the worthy cause.
