Sunderland College Introduces New Dental Course

Sample News Big

Sunderland College has launched a brand new dental course in a bid to increase the number of skilled dental professionals in the area.

Anne Isherwood, principal of the college, said that it is essential for the college to work with local businesses and industry leaders to identify gaps in the market and provide training to benefit the local area. There is currently a shortage of skilled dental workers in the North East and this new course will hopefully help to ease the burden on existing professionals in the future.

The Diploma in Dental Nursing is a vocational programme that will offer a combination of theory-based classroom teaching and practical work placements. The course has been approved by the General Dental Council and nurses will be able to register with the GDC once they have successfully completed their studies.

The programme will be lead by the college’s health team in association with A-Line Dental Services and Ashford Orthodontics. In addition to lectures, nurses will spend time in dental clinics to gain on the job training, hone their practical skills and get used to the working environment.

The college has also revealed plans to introduce apprenticeships in dental nursing and practice management. Programmes will also be available for trainee dental technicians.

The first intake will begin the programme next month and there will be a second intake in September.
