Study finds bacteria more common with certain orthodontic appliances
We all know that when you have braces, you have to be extra-careful when it comes to cleaning your teeth, because acid-producing bacteria can surround the appliances and cause enamel breakdown and discoloration. Now, a new study has found that the very type of orthodontic appliance in your mouth – brackets, wires or bonding material – also has an effect on how much bacteria accumulates.
The Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry study found fewer bacteria in the plaque of most patients with self-ligating orthodontic brackets versus those with elastomeric brackets.
The findings of the study were published in the April issue of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
