Strips or professional treatment ‘more effective than whitening toothpaste’

Whitening toothpastes are bad for people’s teeth, it has been claimed.

US dentists told the Spectator that the toothpaste is no better than normal products and will wear down tooth enamel in a similar way to sandpaper.

They also claimed that the concentration of bleach is "insignificant" and therefore could never make any real difference in tooth shade.

Although whitening strips, which can be bought over the counter, are said to be effective, some claim that professional treatment is the best solution for brighter teeth,

Amy LaVelle, a dental assistant, told the newspaper that she recommends light procedure – consisting of three 15-minute sessions.

"They have come up with a new study that dehydrates your teeth," she said. "Honestly, any whitening gel is going to dehydrate your teeth. Light intensifies that effect. They ultimately re-hydrate."

According to The White Teeth Company, having tooth whitening treatment is a cheaper alternative to surgery, as not only is a bright smile associated with youth, but it can detract attention away from lines around the mouth.ADNFCR-1374-ID-18443213-ADNFCR
