The residents of Stortford are rallying together to raise money to pay for dental work after a popular local man was attacked in an unprovoked incident. 39-year old Colin James, a respected member of the local community, was left with significant dental injuries and a broken nose following an assault in the town last week.

Mr James, who is well-known as the local rail ticket officer, karaoke singer and supporter of charity events, was leaving the Black Lion pub in the early hours of the morning last Friday (6th November) when he was attacked from behind. Moments later, another man was also assaulted. He sustained injuries to the face and chest and was taken to hospital.

Mr James was treated in Harlow’s Princess Alexandra Hospital and he suffered a broken nose, facial injuries, chipped teeth and bruising to his knees. He admitted that he hardly had any recollection of the event and said he has no idea why it happened. He had been for a drink with friends and was heading home when he suddenly found himself on the floor.

Following the incident, news travelled quickly around the town and people left messages on Facebook. Colin’s friend, Stuart also set up an appeal to help raise funds for dental treatment. The Help Colin Smile Campaign is aiming to raise £1,000. Although it has been a very tough ordeal for Colin, he said that he has been bowled over by the response of his friends and thanked everyone for their kind well-wishes and donations towards the appeal.

Police officers are now looking into both incidents and it is not yet clear whether they are connected.
