The Stoptober campaign started at the beginning of October and will run for 28 days to try and encourage the 8 million people who smoke in the UK to quit for good.

According to stop-smoking charities, people who can resist the urge to smoke for 28 days are five times more likely to give up for good and the Department of Health is hoping that people will be inspired to give up smoking and live a healthy lifestyle by the amazing sporting achievements by British athletes over the summer months.

Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, said that smoking is the leading cause of premature death in England, claiming around 100,000 lives every year. Dame Davies added that this was the first mass campaign to encourage people to give up smoking and she hopes that people will get behind the campaign and be able to quit with the support of health professionals; there is a huge amount of information online and free quit packs are available from pharmacies across the country.

Smoking increases the risk of a host of illnesses, including heart disease, cancer and strokes and it also poses a major risk for oral health. Smoking increase the risk of oral cancer and it also contributes to gum disease and stained teeth.
