Stoke City were without their star striker at the weekend after Peter Crouch had to be substituted in a midweek clash with Newcastle United. The statuesque forward was left with severe dental injuries after a collision with Newcastle defender, Fabricio Collicini.

Talking ahead of Saturday’s game with west Bromwich Albion, Stoke manager, Tony Pulis said that Crouch was back in contention after having temporary treatment on his front teeth. The striker lost his two front teeth in the collision and two more teeth were pushed back into the gums, but Pulis said that he was chomping at the bit to start at the weekend and would wear a protective brace, similar to a gum shield, to protect his mouth. The former England striker was caught by Coloccin’s flailing elbow, but Pulis was quick to confirm that there was no malice in the challenge.

Pulis said that in Crouch’s absence he would consider giving Kenwyne Jones a start, with former England, Manchester United and Liverpool striker, Michael Owen a doubt with a hamstring injury.

Crouch had emergency treatment following the clash with Coloccini and he is expected to undergo further treatment to replace the teeth in the coming weeks.
