Stanley dental practice becomes the first North East clinic to support the Teeth Team initiative

A dental practice in Stanley has become the first clinic in the North East to support the Teeth Team initiative. The programme is designed to provide children with dental education in schools, and relies on dental professionals swapping the treatment room for the classroom.

Honour Health has joined forces with Teeth Team to connect with local children and encourage them to adopt positive dental health habits. Recently, dentist, Lewis Kapa and dental nurse, Julie Hughes, took a trip to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School as part of an ongoing commitment to reach out to local children through the Teeth Team project. During the visit, Lewis and Julie spoke to pupils about oral hygiene, and they also provided routine assessments and preventative fluoride varnish treatment. The duo was also on hand to provide information about any further dental care that was required and to offer advice to enable teachers to run supervised brushing sessions. The Honour Health team will visit the school again in six months’ time.

Principal dentist at Honour Health, Onkar Dhanoya, said that the team is “thrilled” to be the first practice in the North East to join up with Teeth Team. Tooth decay is the leading cause of hospital admissions among children in England, and encouraging children to adopt good habits and bringing them into contact with dental professionals could make a massive difference to standards of dental health in the future.
