Southend pupils receive a visit from the Community Dental Service team

Pupils in Southend have been treated to a visit from the local Community Dental Service team as part of a programme to encourage children to look after their smiles.

Members of the oral health improvement team visited staff and students at Friars Primary School to talk to teachers and children about healthy oral habits and the importance of a healthy diet and show them how to brush properly. Kids took part in informal, informative sessions, which included interactive exercises and activities. The aim of the session was to make learning fun, and hopefully, inspire the children to take good care of their teeth and gums.

During the day, the CDS mobile dental unit was parked outside the school, and the children were able to have a look around and ask questions. Many children are scared of going to the dentist and the team wanted to show them that there’s nothing to be worried about.

Lorraine Mattis, from the oral health improvement team, said that it’s really important to encourage kids to learn about dental health at an early age. The visits will hopefully urge children to think about what they eat and to make sure they brush their teeth twice a day. The sessions also play a critical role in preparing kids for dental visits and showing them that dental professionals are friendly and approachable, so that they feel less anxious when the time comes to go for a check-up.
