Shropshire Dentist Warns Against Illegal Whitening

Sample News Big

A Shropshire dentist has warned people that they are putting their health at risk by having illegal whitening treatment.

Dr Ashok Jakhu, owner of Wycherley’s Dental Practice in Newport, said that illegal whitening puts patient’s health at risk. Recent changes in legislation mean that only qualified dentists are allowed to provide whitening services but Dr Jakhu believes that the illegal trade will continue. Dr Jakhu said that for many people cost is the deciding factor and they will visit an untrained practitioner rather than seeing a dentist to save money.

Dr Jakhu said that there are several factors that patients should consider before having whitening treatment but many just look at the cost and then make a decision. Despite the fact that non-dental practitioners are not allowed to offer whitening treatment, this is still going on; Dr Jakhu said that he is seeing more and more people who require corrective treatment as a result of seeing untrained practitioners for whitening treatment.

Dr Jakhu added that whitening, like all other dental treatments, “requires a specific standard”, which cannot be guaranteed unless you see a dentist who has the relevant training and expertise.

The General Dental Council is clamping down on illegal whitening and they are appealing for the public to notify them if they know of any illegal whitening providers.
