Two special needs schools in South Tyneside are celebrating, after receiving £10,000 from the Wrigley’s Tooth Fairy Fund.

Oakleigh Gardens in Cleadon Village and Greenfields Special School in Hebburn are participating in a week-long road-show event to promote oral health and encourage youngsters to look after their teeth and gums.

The road-show has been funded by Wrigley’s Tooth Fairy Fund and is being run by the oral health team from NHS South Tyneside. The roadshows are part of the British Dental Health Foundation’s Oral Health Project, who have teamed up with chewing gum manufacturer Wrigley’s, to promote oral health and raise awareness of oral health issues.

The roadshows kicked off on Monday and will run throughout the week. Children from all over the north east can take part in activities and games and will be invited to take part in role play situations, which will hopefully help them to feel relaxed and comfortable when they visit their dentist for a check-up. At the end of the week children will be invited to attend an assembly and will be given a goodie bag to take home.

The oral health team will visit the special needs schools this week and oral health promotion manager, Joanna Purvis, said that this is a very important exercise, as there are inequalities in dental care, which need to be addressed to ensure that all children receive a high standard of care.
