School Children to Get Mobile Dentist Visit

As part of a scheme to improve the state of youngsters’ teeth, deprived areas are set to get a visit from a mobile dental unit.
Initially, the mobile unit will base itself at three schools in order to check the state of the childrens teeth and gums, this is hoped to improve the dental record of the children in the area as they continue to attend regular checkups.

The ChildSmile run facility will pay weekly visits to three primary schools, in areas that have been identified at the country’s poorest.
NHS Lothian’s clinical director of community dental services, Robert Naysmith, said: “The service would boost the quality of dental provision in the area.

“I am delighted to see the launch of this fantastic new unit which is targeted at children who will benefit greatly from preventative care.

“The specialised dental care and equipment offered in the unit means that children in West Lothian will receive high-quality treatment easily and conveniently.”

Information will also be given to youngsters on foods and drink that are bad for the teeth, and will help them find their own local dentist.

Recent figures show that the number of children admitted to dental hospitals has fallen over the years, this shows that the oral health of children is slowly improving.

Within those figures there is a large gulf relating to wealth, and a child from a poor family is significantly less likely to go for a check up at their local dentist.

Cllr Gordon Munro, who runs a local ward, said: “This sounds like a great initiative, it’s really important to have good dental health as a child.
