A dentist from Budleigh who is set to retire has helped to raise over a hundred pounds for a local charity by hosting a bake-off competition.

Paul Maslen, who is retiring after 30 years in practice, invited colleagues, patients and friends to take part in the Big Devon Bake-Off to raise money for Hospiscare, a charity that provides care for terminally-ill patients and support for their families.

The event kicked off with cream tea and everyone helped themselves to a cup of tea and a range of delicious cakes. This was followed by the main event: the cake baking competition, which was judged by Paul.

The cakes were dental-themed, with toothbrushes aplenty, a giant molar, a patient-shaped cake and a dental chair all presented to the judge. After deliberation, Paul crowned Jodie Parker’s pink denture cake the winner and Di Baker’s ‘liquorice decay’ cake was the runner-up.

The Maslen family thanked local businesses, including the Salterton Arms, Delytes Delicatessen and McMillans Delicatessen for donating prizes for the raffle, and MJ Baker Foodservice for providing the baking ingredients.

The event raised more than £170 for Hospiscare and was enjoyed by all.
