Public Health England will help councils across the UK to try and improve standards of oral health.

Dr Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer for England, suggested that there were flaws with the current system for dental care and called for more to be done to help councils to tackle oral health problems.

Director of health and wellbeing, Professor Kevin Fenton,  at Public Health England, said that the organisation is committed to improving standards of oral health in the UK and confirmed that PHE will be working with dental organisations and local authorities to identify problems and provide solutions.

Although figures confirm that standards of oral health are relatively high in England compared to other parts of the world, there are still some issues with inequality and PHE will work with dental professionals and government bodies to address these.

Mr Fenton added that many of the issues are linked to wider health problems and PHE must therefore work with dentists and other health professionals to ensure that initiatives and measures support both oral and general health.

Public Health England is working in partnership with NHS England, as well as leading dental bodies to ensure that effective dental services are in place and to make sure that these services have sufficient support to enable people to enjoy good oral and overall health.
