Predatory dentists pleads no contest to child sex abuse charges

A voracious dentist pleaded no contest on Monday to child sex charges.
Now retired, David Rees Sperry, 68, is accused of grabbing two boys on a Florida beach and forcing one of them to perform oral sex.
This plea has allowed Sperry to avoid a trial in which, it was suggested by the Newark Advocate, “he would have used an insanity defence” – claiming his medication for Parkinson’s and dementia made him unaware of his conduct.
The Newark resident rejected any bargains that may have reduced his sentence and did not contest allegations of lewd and lascivious battery against a 14-year-old boy.
The youngster told police how Sperry had taken hold of him as he searched for lizards on the beach and made him perform oral sex. Newark Advocate reported that officers found “two see-through male bathing suits, a condom, suntan lotion and toothpicks” in Sperry’s rucksack.
The maximum punishment the dangerous dentist could serve is 15 years in a state prison for this offence.
Sperry had a second sexual battery charge, involving an 18-year-old man, dropped in February.
The dentist’s sentencing will be heard today. It is expected that medical experts will seek a more lenient sentence for the pensioner by providing evidence about his mental health.

Originally arrested on April 3 2007, Sperry and has been free on a $50,000 bond.
He had initially denied all the allegations but the State Attorney’s Office received the DNA test results revealing his involvement.  At this point the dentist’s defence attorney Amira Fox began filing motions to proceed on an insanity defence.
