Popular Ayr dentist retires after 38 years at the same surgery

An incredibly popular and well-respected dentist from Ayr has retired after 38 years. Max Geller hung up his drill last week on what he described as the ‘saddest day of my life’. Although Max was sad to bid farewell to colleagues and patients, he has peace of mind that his beloved clinic, Queens Court Dental, will be left in good hands. Max’s daughter, Hannah, will be taking over the reins and she can’t wait for her new challenge.

Max, who retired on Thursday 3rd August at the age of 64, arrived 20 minutes late for his own farewell party, which his team quipped was entirely typical. He was inundated with cards, bottles of wine and spirits and well-wishes. Having spent his entire career at the same surgery, Max has become an integral part of the local community and he said that it was a great honour to get to know local families well. Often, he treated several members of the same family and in some cases, provided dental care for four generations.

When Max first started, he was part-time, but the surgery grew quickly and under the guidance of Norrie Stevenson, it established an excellent reputation. The clinic expanded and more and more people joined the register.

Max said that walking out for the final time was the “saddest day of my life. But the happiest in that I am handing over to my daughter.”

He added that being a dentist in Ayr had given him a “wonderful lifestyle, great sense of purpose and self-worth.” He will be sadly missed by patients and colleagues alike, but he has promised to keep in touch and he will be keeping a close eye on Hannah in the coming months and years.
