Ponteland dental practice hosts free mouth cancer checks

A dental practice in Ponteland hosted two free screening events to support Mouth Cancer Action Month recently. The team at Honour Health invited residents to attend sessions on Saturday November 17th and Monday November 19th to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

Katherine Lawrence, a dentist at the practice, said that it’s hugely important for dentists to try and raise awareness of mouth cancer because it doesn’t have the public profile of other types of cancer. Statistics show that oral cancer kills more people in the UK than testicular and cervical cancer combined, yet many people are still unaware of the symptoms and risk factors.

Every year in November, the Oral Health Foundation launches its Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign and the Honour Health dental team wanted to do their bit to educate local people about mouth cancer and encourage them to get checked out at one of the sessions or to book a dental check in the coming weeks. Dentists check for potential signs of mouth cancer during routine checks, and they can sometimes detect visible changes in the soft tissue before they start to cause noticeable symptoms.

Appointments were available to anyone registered with the practice.
