Plymouth Students Give Local Children A Lesson In Oral Hygiene

Sample News Big

Students from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry have been giving primary school children a lesson in oral hygiene.

Dental students organised classes with two local primary schools to educate children about teeth cleaning and encourage them to adopt good oral hygiene habits. The students visited year four pupils from Glen Park Primary School and year 3 pupils from Boringdon Primary School.

Pupils learned all about teeth cleaning, healthy eating and the impact of poor oral health and they were invited to get involved in interactive sessions, games and practical tasks, such as making their own toothpaste. There was a quiz about good and bad foods and children were taught about milk and adult teeth.

The school visits were organised entirely by students and the activities were supervised by Professor Gill Jones, the director of undergraduate studies at the university.

Professor Jones said that the school visits are very important for two reasons; firstly, students are able to develop their communication skills and gain experience in working with children and secondly, they enable the university to make a very positive impression on the community and promote good oral health.
