Plymouth Student-Run Dental Facility Praised by Patients

A dental facility run by students from Plymouth Peninsula University has been praised by patients.

Derriford Dental Education Facility received top marks from patients in the Friends and Family Test, a new NHS scheme used to rate dental services. Users of the services are asked to fill in a short survey, which determines whether or not they would recommend a practice or dental centre to their friends and family. The facility had a 100% recommendation rate between May and July.

At Derriford Dental Education Facility, students carry out dental work under the supervision of trained dentists. This enables them to learn on the job, whilst also giving patients the opportunity to benefit from discounted dental fees and gain access to the latest oral health advice and information. Working at the centres gives students an accurate picture of what it is like to work in an NHS practice day to day and prepares them for the world of work once the graduate.

The Devonport Dental Education Facility is also run by students from Plymouth University as part of their social enterprise scheme. This facility also scored well, with a recommendation rate of 96% for the same period.

The university also runs similar facilities in Truro and Exeter.
