Plymouth Dental Students Visit Local Children to Talk About Healthy Eating

Sample News Big

A group of Plymouth dental students visited local children to talk to them about healthy eating and how important a good diet is for healthy teeth and gums.

Year 2 students from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry visited toddlers and their parents at Sure Start to talk to them about the impact of diet on oral health.

Serena Manohar, one of the students, said that everyone is really enjoying the sessions and the children and parents seem to be getting a lot from them. The aim is to raise awareness of the link between diet and oral health and to enable people to make well-informed decisions about the foods they eat and those they give to their children.

Some sessions will also be focusing on breastfeeding, weaning and reducing the intake of sugar for very young children.

Recently, a report published by Public Health England showed that 12 per cent of young children showed signs of dental decay, despite the fact that decay is almost entirely preventable.

Programmes like this one running in Plymouth help to engage parents and children in oral health issues, and provide them with the information and knowledge they need to reduce the risk of dental decay.
