A dental student from Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry is preparing to compete for a prestigious national prize after winning the local heat of the Dental Skills Competition run by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Lucy Wright, a final year student, successfully beat off her competition to win the regional heat and will now compete at the finals, which will take place in Edinburgh in March 2014.

This competition is no like other available to dental students; in its first year, it is running across 14 dental schools in the UK, with students able to show off their skill set and compete against other students.

The winner of each heat is then added to the short-list, with the overall winner awarded an all-expenses trip, including travel and accommodation, to the mid-winter meeting of the Chicago Dental Society, which will take place on October 2015.

Lucy gained full marks in her heat and is now looking forward to competing in Edinburgh next year; the runners-up were Samantha Jayaweera-Bandara and Alexander Pollard.

Professor Malcolm Bruce, director of simulated learning at the university, said that as expected, the standard was very high and he was very impressed with the students’ efforts.
