A playful puppy has a new lease of life thanks to cutting-edge bionic dental treatment. When Labrador puppy Hanna, cracked her tooth on a bone a few months ago, she became withdrawn and lost her appetite. Now, thanks to pioneering treatment carried out by researchers and dental professionals from the University of Santos, Hanna is back to her energetic self.

Researchers from the university, which is located in the south of Brazil, used an innovative 3D printing system to create a bionic tooth. In a ground-breaking procedure, the team fitted the new tooth, enabling Hanna to chew, eat, and play without any pain or discomfort.

The team was headed by Dr Paul Miamoto, who was responsible for creating the tooth template, and design expert Cicero Moraes, who fabricated the new tooth using a mixture of cobalt and chromium. The pair is part of the charitable group known as the Animal Avengers. The procedure to fit the tooth was carried out by fellow Animal Avengers colleague, veterinary surgeon, Roberto Fecchio. Based in Brazil, the group, which also includes Dr Rodrigo Rabello and Dr Sergio Camargo, uses their collaborative skills to produce prosthetics for animals.

Examples of projects the team has worked on include creating prosthetic beaks for toucans, parrots, and gees and a replacement hull for an injured turtle.

Mr Moraes said that Hanna’s new tooth is stronger than the original tooth, and this will enable her to eat again with no trouble at all.

Surgeon Roberto Fecchio explained that Hanna had become very down and wasn’t herself as a result of breaking the tooth, and now, she has a new lease of life and loves to play again.
