People have been queuing for lingual braces at the Maulana Azad Dental College and Hospital in New Delhi, it has been revealed.

Dr Mahesh Varma, director and principal of the college, said that it is clear that society is becoming increasingly image conscious and lingual braces have become very popular because they provide a solution for patients who have been put off having braces by the aesthetic and social implications of wearing a brace. Unlike traditional braces, lingual braces are attached to the back of the teeth, meaning that they are invisible when you smile or open your mouth.

Dr Varma said that lingual braces have taken over from invisible braces, which became very popular a couple of years ago; currently, there is a wait of least one year for the braces, but patients are willing to wait to get a perfect smile without having to wear visible braces.

Beth is one patient who is looking forward to showing of her new smile; as an air hostess, her appearance is very important and she was worried about wearing braces because she spends a lot of time smiling at and talking to passengers. When she heard about lingual braces, she was interested instantly and she is now looking forward to unveiling her new smile in 8-12 month’s time.

Prices for the treatment start from around £1,700.
