People 'look healthier with whitened teeth'

People want to look their best and are turning to teeth whitening treatments in the process, it has been claimed.

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, the cosmetic dental procedure may not change someone into Eva Longoria or George Clooney, but it can enhance someone's features and improve their smile.

Dr Selena Pape, a dentist at Mortsenson Family Dental in Prospect, explained that teeth whitening "makes your eyes stand out more and it makes you look healthier".

"It's a little more of a dramatic look and, I think, a youthful look - and it just brightens everything up," she added.

However, Dr Gary Crim of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, warned that patients need to have a healthy mouth as decay does not act as a good base for bleach.

In addition, sensitive teeth may experience a certain level of pain, he said, adding that patients often experience tingling when drinking cold beverages or eating ice-cream for example.
