A pensioner was left with severe bruising and had two teeth knocked out after being attacked by a 31 year old man in Loughborough.

The 74-year-old woman was approached by Brendan Patten and forced to the floor, where he repeatedly hit her and stole her bag. A local resident came to the pensioner’s rescue, attending the scene and giving chase to the man, eventually catching him and reclaiming the bag.

David Hynds was described as “courageous” by Judge Michael Pert QC at Leicester Crown Court as the court heard that he had come running after hearing the woman’s screams, quickly chasing the man and detaining him before giving him to police.

The woman was on the floor bleeding when Patten ran off with her handbag and she suffered bruising on her face and lost two of her teeth in the attack. She now requires long-term dental treatment and has been severely shaken by the incident.

Judge Michael Pert QC sentenced Patten to imprisonment for six years after he admitted to attacking the pensioner on March 30th. He also confessed to possession of cannabis, theft of £6,000 for his mother’s partner and five additional charges of theft, including the robbery of £80,000 worth of aluminium from his one time employer, Boal UK Ltd.

David Hynds was praised for his heroic response and awarded £250 of public money.

Sarah-Jane Varley, representing Patten, said that he was humiliated by his actions, but did not have a memory of the attack, as he was inebriated at the time. She added that he had said that if the incident did occur “he must be an animal.” She also added that the incidents had left Patten isolated from his family.
