Pennsylvania dentist to become the first to welcome a robot into the treatment room

A dentist from Pennsylvania is set to become the world’s first general dentist to welcome a robot into his treatment room.

Dr Eddie Kotary, from Kotor Detary & Associates in State College, said that he is hugely excited to be the world’s first general dentist to use Yomi, the planet’s first robot-assisted surgical system. The system is designed to help dentists, rather than to replace them, and Yomi will play an instrumental role in enabling Dr Kotor to offer minimally-invasive dental treatment.

Dr Kotary explained that the innovative system will enable him to place dental implants without the need for sutures or a scalpel in most cases, which makes the procedure much less invasive and speeds up healing processes. The system takes care of the entire process, from planning to fitting the implants, assisting with taking scan images, analysing the detailed pictures and planning the procedure step by step. Utilising Yomi will speed up the process and reduce costs for both dentists and patients.

Dr Kotary said that he will now be able to place an implant immediately if a patient comes in with a broken tooth, for example, without the need to create any impressions or send off for a guide. This will save a substantial amount of time and money and simplify the treatment process. Yomi can also increase accuracy by guiding the dentist and correcting them. In the case of an implant, for example, the assistant will correct the dentist based on their hand positions and the detailed treatment plan drawn up for that individual patient.

Yomi is due to arrive in State College in the next couple of weeks, and the staff team is looking forward to embracing the future of the dentistry.
