An assembly panel has approved plans for a new oral health centre in New Jersey.

The plans are to build the New Jersey Center for Oral Health at the New Jersey Dental School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Valerie Vainieri Huttle, from the Assembly panel, said that the plans had been approved as the centre would promote good oral health and help to provide better standards of care for local children. The Assembly said that the new centre would be of great benefit to local people; the centre would help to educate people about the importance of oral health and encourage them to take better care of their teeth and gums.

Members of the panel said that they had taken into consideration the research that suggested that oral health contributes to general health; numerous studies have now indicated that poor oral health can lead to an increased risk of serious medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and strokes.

The plans have been approved on the basis that the new facility will educate local people, provide a valuable source of information for the community, provide assistance for existing dental facilities and provide education and information for schoolchildren. Members of staff from the centre will liaise with local schools and education officers in order to establish programmes to teach children about oral health and looking after their teeth and gums.
