Dentists are advocating using ozones as the best non-invaisive way to treat tooth decay.
Professor Edward Lynch, of Queen’s University, Belfast, discussed the benefits of the procedure in his talk ‘Minimal Invasive Dentistry for the 21st Century’ at Dentistry 2009.
In his lecture, which was held in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Dr Lynch explained that experts were learning more and more about how the molecular mechanisms of ozone work and said that the state-of-the-art technology allows dentists approach treatment in a more conservative minimally invasive way.
Ozone is a reactive oxygen molecule which is used in dentistry to kill bacteria. Some oral health professionals now prefer it to drilling or filling cavities.
This form of treatment is beneficial as dentists will not have to use drills, anaesthetics or fillings.
It is also extremely effective killing 99 per cent of bacteria found in cavities and can whiten teeth as well.
In the talk, Dr Lynch also discussed the benefits of using ‘ozonated’ water in dental clinics, which would kill virus and bacteria upon contact.
As ozone is a cost effective form of dental treatment too, so we could soon the whole industry revolutionised.
