One-sixth of people living on the streets have had to pull out their own teeth because of a lack of access to dental care, a shocking survey has revealed today. Over 70% of homeless people surveyed have reported losing teeth since they have ended up homeless, with 17% of these reporting that they have lost teeth because of a violent attack and 7% reporting that they have lost all of their teeth.

These survey results were revealed by the charity Groundswell, and the issue has been raised in parliament by the MP for Walthamstow, Stella Creasy.

She demanded a meeting with Health Minister Jackie Doyle-Price, who agreed that the government needs to look into the issue.

Other parts of the survey revealed that nearly a third of homeless people have had dental pain at some point, and 27% have said they have needed to go to Accident and Emergency to receive treatment.
