An amateur rugby player from Nottingham was left with thousands of pounds’ worth of dental damage after he was viciously attacked by an opponent during a match.

David Smith from Paviors Rugby Club was assaulted by John Scowby of Leedbrook Rugby Club, during a match in October last year. Mr Smith suffered extensive dental injuries after he was kicked repeatedly in the face by the Leesbrook player. In court in Derby earlier this week, prosecutors said that Mr Scowby had kicked his opponent so hard that his mouth was left “concaved”.

Mr Smith shared his experiences at Derby Crown Court, informing the judge that he was worried his fiancé would want to cancel their wedding, which was due to take place months after the attack, because he felt so unattractive. he removed a temporary plate to show the court the impact of the assault. He has since given up rugby and is convinced people will always remember his for his disfigured face rather than his talents on the field. The attack happened on his mother’s birthday, October 3rd and he said this date will forever mark the “worst day” of his life.

Prosecuting, Sonal Ahya described the attack as unprovoked and said that Mr Scowby had said he owed his opponent one when questioned about the assault at the end of the game. Mr Scowby was jailed for 16 months after pleading guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm.

Mr Smith requires thousands of pounds’ wroth of dental treatment to repair the damage he sustained at the hands of Mr Scowby. He plans to have implant treatment, which will cost around £10,000 and involve a bone graft procedure. Bone tissue will be taken from his hip and used to build the jaw tissue up so it can support an implant.
