There are no plans to create more NHS dental places in the Vale of Glamorgan, it has been confirmed.

Welsh Conservative leader, Mr Andrew Davies AM, confirmed that he had been to a meeting with Adam Cairns, the chief executive of the Cardiff and Vale Health Board, to discuss dental services in the Vale. Mr Andrews said that Mr Cairns had confirmed that there were currently no plans to expand services or create new places in the near future.

The news comes as a growing number of patients in the area struggle to find an NHS dentist. There had been a significant increase in the local population, yet dental services have not been expanded to cater for this and subsequently, there is a shortage of places. Many patients have been told that they will need to wait for treatment, while others are travelling long distances to get dental treatment.

Mr Davies said that he is frequently approached by members of the public in his constituency who have been turned away from dental surgeries and there are currently no practices taking on new adult patients. Patients are being advised by the health board to consider registering with practices in Bridgend and towns to the east of Cardiff.

Mr Davies pledged to continue working to do more to make dental services more accessible, but admitted that the service was failing local people. He accused the Welsh Government of letting people down and said that extra investment was needed to make sure that everyone in Wales has access to NHS dental care.
