NHS need to Provide Better Future for Dentists

The dentistry industry has called for the NHS to provide a better future for dentists and patients.
The British Dental Association has pleaded with the NHS following the independent review of the NHS dental services in the UK by Professor Jimmy Steel.
The review and study found that there was need for greater and improved communication from both the NHS and the Primary Care Trust (PCT) regarding ‘how dentists can be found’ and ‘what to expect from dentists’.
The Primary Care Trust is responsible for paying dentists directly, this has been the case since the dental contract was introduced in April 2006 and dentists are contracted to provide services by these organisations.
The British Dental Association (BDA) have stated that dentistry patients have three banded charges to pay for a NHS dental care course, these bands are dependent on how complex the treatment each patient needs.
The BDA are keen that the reforms suggested in Professor Jimmy Steel’s study are properly implemented as they will benefit dentistry substantially.
Dr Susie Sanderson, chair of the BDA’s executive board, said: “For the good of patients and dentists alike, it is important that a better future for NHS dentistry is sought in which the reforms recommended by Professor Steele’s report are properly consulted on, meaningfully piloted and implemented.”
