New Zealand’s only dental school is to undergo a $200 million renovation programme, it has been confirmed.

The current building, which is located at Otago University in Dunedin, opened in the 1960’s. The building plans include a dramatic modernisation of the existing facility in addition to the creation of a brand new clinical building, which will be located next door. One of the chemistry buildings will also be revamped to include a ‘super-laboratory’ as part of the university’s modernisation programme. The structure of the buildings will be strengthened to offer greater protection against earthquakes.

Building work will commence on the chemistry block in September and improvements will begin on the dental school in November. The construction work will be overseen by architectural firm Asmax, which is based in Auckland.

Professor Lyall Hanton, head of department for chemistry, said that the improvements will make a huge difference to staff members and students. The new and improved block will house light, spacious teaching rooms and labs with high speed Internet access in addition to social spaces. The modernisation will benefit some 1,800 students.
