New Programme Launched to Promote Good Dental Health Among Barnsley’s Children

Sample News Big

A new oral health programme featuring superheroes has been launched with the aim of encouraging children in Barnsley to adopt good oral hygiene.

Figures show that 5 year old children in Barnsley have lower standards of oral health than children in other parts of the country and the council is hoping that the new scheme will help to improve standards and reduce rates of dental decay, which currently stand at around 40 percent.

Barnsley Council is using superheroes to get kids involved in oral health and inform and educate them about the importance of brushing their teeth. Children will be provided with a brushing chart that tracks their progress each day and the main aim is to get them to brush for two minutes twice a day.

Research suggests that good dental hygiene habits during childhood increase the chances of good oral health during adulthood, and dentists across the country are trying to work with councils and MPs to target young children and bring down rates of decay. In addition to issues related to poor oral hygiene, today’s children also consume more sugar than children in previous generations and this is undoubtedly contributing to dental problems.
