A new online portal has been launched in the US to provide professional information to patients concerned about media reports regarding lead contamination in dental crowns.

News outlets in the US have reported suspected cases of contamination in crowns imported from overseas. The National Association of Dental Laboratories has decided to reassure and help the public via www.whatsinyourmouth.us.

Staff will be on hand to deal with questions from worried patients who have been following the story of a person in Ohio who was made ill by lead contamination, reports Dentistry.co.uk.

A US study has also found that some dental products are contaminated with dangerously high levels of lead.

The NADL has said it recognises that this is a "serious concern for not only dental patients but for the dental community as a whole".

Tony Griffin, the director of health science at Castle College in Nottingham, told Dentistry.co.uk that dental authorities in the UK should tighten regulations in order to prevent similar cases occurring in Britain.
