New NHS practice set to open in Barrow

A new NHS dental practice is set to open in Barrow.

The new surgery will open in Duke Street in the autumn and will provide around two and a half thousand NHS dental places. The surgery will open in an office block, which has been empty for the last fifteen months.

The application to turn the office space into a new dental practice was submitted after a survey by the local Primary Care Trust revealed that Barrow had a shortage of NHS dentists; the application was approved by Barrow Borough Council and local residents are delighted.

The new practice will employ seven members of staff and provide local dental services for more than two thousand patients. Heather Vickers, who was instrumental in putting together the change of use planning application, said the new surgery will be of “considerable benefit” to the local community.

The dental practice will be managed by Oasis Dental Care in conjunction with the NHS. The surgery will be involved in Cumbria’s dental health pilot scheme, which focuses on preventative oral healthcare and educating patients about caring for their teeth and gums. The practice will conduct oral examinations for all new patients and their treatment pathway will be designed to cater for their needs based on the findings of the assessment.

Preventative dental care helps to reduce the need for complex dental treatment in the future and may save the NHS millions of pounds in dental treatment further down the line.
